Point Reyes Hike - 14 miles loop

- Point Reyes Hike: 14 miles loop via Muddy Hollow/Drake's Head/Estero trails -

Come on out with your fellow NorCal Snowboarder peeps as we gather for a 14 miles loop hike in gorgeous Point Reyes National Seashore.

CARPOOL LINK

Important Info about our Carpool Policy

DISTANCE: 14 miles

ELEVATION GAIN: 300 feet - The trail is for the most part flat

ROUTE TYPE: Loop

DIFFICULTY: Easy to moderate. Endurance for long walking is all you will need. Very little elevation change.

TRAILHEAD: Muddy Hollow

DESCRIPTION: This is a beautiful hike: mellow and not much up and down at all, creeks, bridges, various foliage, cattle, diverse wildlife. We'll have lunch at Drakes Head (mile 6). From the bluff we can look down into the estuary during high tide and observe marine life. We'll try to hit the bluff right around high tide, 1:25 pm. This will give us the best chance of seeing rays and leopard sharks. Bring binoculars. On a clear day, Drakes Head is the best view spot in Point Reyes. Expansive views offer a panoramic sweep of Drakes Bay from the headlands to Double Point. There is not much shade on this hike, so plan accordingly. This will be our route:

PARKING: The parking area at the Muddy Hollow trailhead is tiny. Not a lot of cars fit in.  We will meet to condense into as few cars as possible at the parking lot ACROSS THE ROAD from the Bear Valley Visitor Center (1 Bear Valley Visitor Center Access Road, Point Reyes Station, CA 94956) by the bathroom next to the Earthquake trailhead.

After a restroom stop we'll head out to the Muddy Hollow trailhead. Directions: Drive north on Bear Valley Visitor Center Access Road. Turn left onto Bear Valley Rd. Drive 1.3 miles. Turn left onto Limantour Rd. Drive 5.9 miles. Turn right at Limantour Spit Rd. Drive 0.2 miles to the trailhead.

DOGS: Not allowed

WEATHER FORECAST: Lower 50s to upper 70s

CARPOOL INFO:

• If you are willing to drive, please state in RSVP how many you can take.

• We meet at 7:15am on the dot, we leave no later than 7:30am. Walmart at 755 Riverpoint Ct. in West Sacramento.

• Arrive at the parking lot ACROSS THE ROAD from the Bear Valley Visitor Center (1 Bear Valley Visitor Center Access Road, Point Reyes Station, CA 94956) no later than 9:30am.

• If you plan on carpooling, have $25 cash. Please have exact change!

Remember to bring:

• $25 for gas for the driver (if you're carpooling; exact change is appreciated)

• Comfortable shoes. Hiking boots preferable. Sections of the trail may be muddy.

• Plenty of water/Gatorade

• Small towel.

• Snacks / Lunch / Picnic blanket

• Sunscreen / sunglasses / hat

• Hiking poles

• Camera / Binoculars

• Mosquito repellant

• Weather can be unpredictable, so bring layered clothing.

Trivia Night at Cap's Pizza & Tap House

-TRIVIA NIGHT-

Come out and join us for a fun night doing trivia.

Things to know:

• Start time is at 6:30pm, but should arrive at 5:45pm to get seats.

• Ends at 8:30pm approx.

• Trivia is hosted by Geeks Who Drink. This is the format:

The quiz consists of eight rounds of eight questions each, played by teams of up to six people. Questions are read aloud by the quizmaster and teams write down the answers, turning them in at the end of each round.

Rounds 1,  4 and 6 are themed rounds – anything from "Eight Questions About Sex That Won’t Make You Too Uncomfortable" to "TV Shows Your Parents Watch." Round 2 is a music round worth double points: name the artist and title for each song clip. Round 3 is a multiple choice round or a speed round. Round 5 is a visual round based on a printed handout. The all-audio Round 7 usually covers movies or TV shows, and is worth the standard eight points. Finally, Round 8 is always 16 points on Random Knowledge.

One round can be jokered, doubling your points for that round only (yes, the 16-point rounds are fair game). The team with the most points after eight rounds is the winner.

• Cap's Pizza & Tap House serves delicious brick oven pizza, wings and pasta which you can pair with a great local craft beer or glass of wine. They have 36 beers on tap and dozens more in bottled form. The location also has pool tables, dart boards and assorted board games.

So put on your thinking caps, and let's compete with 10 to 12 other teams!! Lots of fun, and a great way to socialize while enjoying grub 'n drinks.

Lower Lola Montez Lake - 6.4 miles out and back hike

Lower Lola Montez Lake - 6.4 miles out and back hike

- Lower Lola Montez Lake - 6.4 milesout and back hike -

Come on out with your fellow NorCal Snowboarder members as we gather for a 6.4 miles out and back hike to beautiful Lower Lola Montez in Soda Springs.

DISTANCE: 6.4 miles

ELEVATION GAIN: 1069 feet

ROUTE TYPE: Out and back

TRAILHEAD: Lower Lola Montez Trailhead

TRAIL: This is a lightly trafficked hike, good for all skill levels and rated Easy as there is a combination of hiking by dirt roads as well as footpaths. Much of this trail is on private property so hikers are requested to stay on the trail which leads to Lower Castle Creek crossing and a beautiful forest canopy and meadow before reaching the lake. The Lower Lola Montez Trail is really a few sections of trail interspersed between longer stretches of road. Pleasantly, the first quarter-mile does start with a trail section that quickly connects to the road above. Follow the road to where the Lower Castle Creek crosses over the roadbed. A quarter mile farther along the road, the next portion of singletrack cuts away to the right. This section quickly becomes notably steeper as hikers wind their way up a loose and rocky slope over several stair sections.  The route returns to the road along a mellow grade. About a mile above, the road eventually fades away into singletrack near an open meadow. Just past the lower edge of the meadow is an intersection with the Hole in the Ground Trail and the Lower Lola Montez Lake Connector. Follow the connector to promptly arrive at the lake. You will be able to take as much time as you'd like to play, swim, nap, eat, etc. at Lower Lola Montez Lake.

PARKING: On I-80 take the Soda Springs exit (#174). On the north side of the Interstate turn right immediately on Sherritt Road and drive for about one-half mile past the fire station to the parking area.

DOGS: Allowed, bring a leash

WEATHER: Upper 70s to lower 80s

Backpacking Trinity Alps

Backpacking Trinity Alps

-Backpacking Trinity Alps-

Come join the NorCal Snowboarders crew for 2 nights at Trinity Alps. (Overnighter is optional as well, however not recommended due to the far destination).

Rising between the Coast Range and the Shasta-Lassen stretch of the Cascades in Northern California, the Trinities are a landscape of imposing alpines, lush forested valleys, serene glacial lakes and cascading creeks

Canyon Creek Lakes Trail

Canyon Creek Lakes Trail is a 14-16 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail  that features a lake and is rated as difficult. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from April until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail.

The Canyon Creek watershed is the most popular destination for hiking and backpacking in the Trinity Alps. During the summer months more than five waterfalls can be seen or heard from the trail to the Canyon Creek Lakes. During late spring and early summer over 50 waterfalls can be found in this watershed, some of which require backcountry travel to observe. On calm days the lakes in this area become near perfect mirrors and reflect the surrounding peaks and clouds

The Trinity Alps Wilderness is a bastion of many wildlife species, and Canyon Creek is no exception. The largest of animals in the area are black bear, mountain lions, and black tailed deer. At night many visitors can hear and see deer walk into their camp searching for any source of salt they can find. These deer are known for licking and tearing clothes that have been exposed to sweat. Osprey are also frequently observed in Canyon Creek and throughout the rest of the Trinity Alps. Nearly every night at dusk, when conditions are clear, an osprey can be seen and heard fishing at the lakes. A pair of binoculars can make this a very cool show

Agent Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron) is equal parts spycraft, sensuality and savagery, willing to deploy any of her skills to stay alive on an impossible mission. Sent alone into Berlin to retrieve a priceless dossier from within the destabilized city, she partners with embedded station chief David Percival (James McAvoy) to navigate her way through a deadly game of spies.

Come on out with some of your fellow NorCal Snowboarders, as we watch Atomic Blonde at Century Cinema 16. Get to enjoy the film while you are lounging to the ultimate comfort.

Meet in the lounge area of the theater near the bar, then we will walk to our seats

Showtime will be 7:00pm, I will be sitting at G24. You can find ticket(s) here

Do note that this theater does reserved seating arrangements so you are set once the ticket(s) is locked in.

Hike to Maggie's Peak, Tahoe

Hike to Maggie's Peak, Tahoe

-Hike to Maggie's Peak, Tahoe-

Carpool

Carpool Policy

DISTANCE: 6.5 miles

ELEVATION GAIN: 1774 feet

ROUTE TYPE: Loop

TRAILHEAD: Bayview Trailhead (Emerald Bay rd, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150)

Granite Lake & Maggie's Peaks is a 3.7 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Tahoma, California that features a lake and is rated as moderate. We will be connecting this with a portion of the Azure Lake hike via Eagle Lake Trail to add an additional 3 miles. You may choose to go back the same way to keep the hike at 3.7 miles.

Maggies Peaks overlook the rapturous blue waters of Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe, Granite Lake and Desolation Wilderness. Maggies Peaks are gateway pillars to Desolation Wilderness overlooking Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe. There are two prominences: the north peak is 8,499' and south peak is 8,699'. The trail starts from Bayview trailhead and offers sweeping panoramic views on the way up to Granite Lake, and from the top of either peak. Allow 4 or more hour’s roundtrip.

The first mile delivers steep elevation gains and the best views of the bay. From there, the trail flattens out briefly where Granite Lake is tucked away in alpine forest. The southern peak of Maggies Peaks stands about 1000 feet above. After Granite Lake, the trail continues up a saddle in between Maggie's two peaks. We will summit Maggies Peak South, which is said to have the better view. There is not a trail that goes to the top of either peak, but there is very little low lying vegetation, and it is easy to navigate. There may be some remaining snow left at this point. After returning to the trail, we will continue farther and take a right at the first fork. This will take us past Eagle Lake and Eagle Falls and terminates on the road just ¾ miles from the Bayview trailhead.

Dogs are able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

Please don't forget your sunscreen, water, and your sense of adventure!

POST HIKE:
After the hike has concluded, we can find a spot nearby to grab some food before heading back

REMEMBER TO BRING:

• $20 for gas for the driver (if you're carpooling; Exact change is appreciated)

• Comfortable shoes

• Sunscreen

• Weather can be unpredictable, so have layers that you can shed. Light weight pants are recommended.

Lassen National Park Hiking & Camping

-Backpacking & Camping at Butte Lake (Lassen National Forest)-

Come join the NorCal Snowboarders crew for 2 nights at Butte Lake in Lassen National Forest. (Overnighter is optional as well). A MODERATE trail winding around two lakes, Butte and Snag Lakes, through the cinder fields. This trip makes a great overnight backpacking trip. This a moderate hike, with gentle elevation gain around both Butte and Snag Lakes. The trail is well marked, easy to follow, and rarely busy. Once you circle around both lakes, the landscape opens onto the cinder fields. Take note to follow the established trail only in order to minimize impacts on the cinder fields. Travel across the cinder fields and straight up the backside of the the Cinder Cone. This is by far, the most strenuous portion of this trip. Elevation gain up Cinder Cone is only about 800 ft. but hiking up the cinder is like walking in find sand. Make sure to take the time to explore the top of Cinder Cone before decending down the other side and making the roughtly mile hike back to the Butte Lake Campground.
